Rhythm

A well-timed, almost musical loop of motion

The Pleasure of Pattern

What’s your favorite song? Think about it and then tap your toe to the beat. That’s rhythm. And your repeated moves in the bedroom—whether it’s rubbing, tapping or penetrating; whether you’re using a finger, tongue, penis or toy—all have a rhythm.

Because of how sensitive we are, even with the exact same motion, slightly different rhythms feel really different. And by experimenting with rhythms and zeroing in on what feels best when, you can take something that already feels great and go to the next level.

Variation 1: Skipping

Skipping is where you take a break in between each motion or skip every other motion.

Many women swear by this. As Maria says, “by holding back and skipping every other touch, you can create a sweet frustration—like only half-scratching an itch.” Creating a desire that’s never 100% satisfied leads to a slower buildup and longer, more intense orgasm.

The best way to try it is to take a touch that already works for you and skip part of it, over and over. For instance, if what you love is swipes that go left-right-left-right, try left-pause-left-pause and skip right-swipe each time. It can be a little frustrating at first and it takes longer, but it can dial up the intensity of your orgasm later.

Variation 2: Raindrops

Irregular rhythms have different amounts of time between each motion. Women who swear by this randomness say it stays exciting because their clit doesn’t know what exactly is coming next. It keeps up the suspense and surprise! While many women prefer consistent motion, others really like to avoid routine even in the timing of a single repeating motion.

Variation 3: Back-to-Back

Back-to-back is when you repeat your motion right after finishing the last one with no pauses in between. With this rhythm, there’s no time for the pleasure to die down between motions. As one woman who prefers back-to-back rhythm put it,

“For me, getting an orgasm is like blowing up a balloon till it pops—if you stop even for a half-second, then the air starts coming out. So the movement can’t have any little breaks in it... right when one ends, the next one is already starting, so it feels inside like it’s one long motion.”

Variation 4: Constant Pulsating

Constant pulsating is so fast that it’s almost a blur. You move so quickly that it becomes a flutter. After all, there’s a reason vibrators are so popular. Olivia, below, finishes with a pulsating that never leaves the skin—it stays in contact and the pressure is what flutters and pulsates.

One woman who prefers this rhythm summed it up with this,

“I used to only orgasm with a vibrator but found that if the finger or tongue moves just really slightly—like almost no distance at all but so fast that it’s like a vibrator—I can get that same feeling.”

With penetration, pulsating is an extremely popular stroke because it allows a tiny amount of movement to constantly stimulate the clit.

“The springs of the bed let us be almost super-human fast,” reports another woman, “but it only feels good if he stays inside and we’re shaking together, not in-out really fast like in porn.”

Another woman explained it like this,

“It doesn’t feel good when it goes in and out really fast—guys think I like that—but what works best for me is when he’s all the way inside and the area above his dick is against my clit, and he uses his feet on the footboard at the bottom of the bed to quiver and tremble really fast so he becomes like my vibrator.”

Jillian demonstrates her style of Rhythm

Each person doesn’t have ‘one best rhythm.’ What feels best changes day by day and, more importantly, stage by stage. Jillian, for instance, likes fast, back to back tapping at the beginning, then slow tapping, then irregular tapping.

Helpful Guidelines

  • Experimentation. It’s fun to take the motions that you know already feel great and try adjusting the rhythm in different ways to see which feel even better.
  • Slow Burn. Many swear by slowing the rhythm in the buildup to prolong and extend the orgasm. It can be frustrating and difficult to stick with it but it has its rewards.

Most Common Challenges

  • Pressure. You don’t have to press too hard. Rhythmic movements can be very subtle and still feel wonderful. Think about a vibrator’s micro-movements and that feels pretty great, right?
  • Irregular Motions. Some people just don’t like irregular motion and need things consistent. But even arrhythmic motions can be made consistent if you start repeating them. It’s like jazz - repeat a “mistake” the same way again and again and it’s not a mistake anymore.
